Professor Cavanagh joined the Syracuse University faculty in 1967 and served as chair of the Department of Religion from 1974-1980. In Fall 2006, he returned to the Department after twenty-six years in administration as Associate Dean, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, 1980-86 and University Vice President of Undergraduate Studies 1986-2006. In 1978 he co-authored the book Introduction to the Study of Religion, and in 1985 co-authored the book Religion: An Introduction. His present foci of inquiry include: the role of religion study in the contemporary university; the role of religion in psychosocial development; and the link between faith, doubt and fanaticism.
