September 8 SU Professor and former New York Times writer Gustav Niebuhr will be speaking at the Alibrandi Catholic Center on "Catholicism and the Modern Media" at 8 p.m. A reception with refreshments will follow.

October 1 Suzan Harjo Lecture on "From Columbus to Wahoo: What They Don't Know and How It Hurts Us" at 5:30 p.m. at the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons in Bird Library.

October 2-4 "Place / No Place: Spatial Aspects of Urban Asian Religiosity" Mellon Conference with speakers coming from Singapore, Seoul, and Hong Kong as well as many scholars from Canada and the United States. October 21 Professor Jim Watts will speak to the CNY Skeptics on the topic, “Polemics about Scriptures in Western Culture," at 7 p.m. in the Betts Branch Library's Meeting Room, 4862 S. Salina St., Syracuse.

October 22 Professor Jack Caputo is lecturing on "From Angelology to Technology: A History of Hope" at Siena College at 4:00 pm in the Key Auditorium.

November 4 The Alibrandi Center is hosting a joint lecture which will be presented by Syracuse Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Thomas Costello and Maxwell Professor Margaret Susan Thompson on Catholicism and American Politics at 8:00 pm.

November 5 Steve Newcomb will be speaking on "The Smoking Gun: The Doctrine of Christian Discovery in Federal Anti-Indian Law and Policy," at 5:30 pm, in the Peter Graham Scholarly Commons in Bird Library

November 5 Professor Massad will be speaking on "Conjunctive Prepositions: Sexuality and/in Islam," at 4:30 pm, in room 341 Eggers Hall.

November 10 Festival of Faiths, Louisville, Ky. "Sacred Waters: The Significance of Water and Associated Rituals in the Great Faith Traditions—an Interfaith Panel Led by Gustav Niebuhr.” With Shayk Hamza Yusuf and others.

December 1 Peter Rollins from the Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College Dublin, will be speaking on "To Believe is Human, To Doubt Divine: An Exploration of Zizek's Christology" at 5:00 pm in the Kilian Room.

Spring 2009

March 17 "A Commemorative Politics of Carriage" Lecture by Angie Heo, a Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Barnard College. The lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in 500 Hall of Langauges.

March 22 Lecture by Virginia Burrus (Drew University) and Karmen MacKendrick (Lemoyne College) entitled "'Desire Prays': Augustinian Seductions." The lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in the Graham Scholarly Commons in Bird Library.

September 17 Reception and book signing for Gustav Niebuhr's book Beyond Tolerance: Searching for Interfaith Understanding in America will take place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in Room 434 (The I3 Center), Newhouse III.

November 12 David Wills Lecture "Derrida’s The Animal That Therefore I am" at 5 p.m. in the Kilian Room (500 HL). David Wills, Professor, SUNY Albany, Department of English (Doctorat du troisieme cycle, Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris) Joint Appointment, Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Literary Theory, Film and Film Theory, 20th century French Literature, Comparative Literature. David Wills came to Albany in 1998 from Louisiana State University, where he was chair of the department of French and Italian. He holds a joint
appointment in French and English. His B.A. and M.A. degrees are from the
University of Auckland, and his doctorate from the Université de Paris
III-Sorbonne Nouvelle (1979). His original research was in Surrealist poetry
but his published work has concentrated on literary theory, especially the
work of Derrida, film theory and comparative literature. He teaches classes
in 20th century literature, literary theory, and film and is the translator of Derrida's The Animal that Therefore I am.
