Originally from the Bay Area, Abel earned his BA in Philosophy and Religion from San Francisco State University and MA in Religious Studies from the University of Missouri. His research focuses on the intersection of place, ethnic identity, and ritual practice, particularly within Native American/Indigenous, Neo-Pagan, and Latin@ communities. His interdisciplinary approach to research in Religious Studies draws from Anthropology, Folklore Studies, Feminist Theory, Indigenous Studies, and History of Religions. Abel’s MA thesis was an ethnographic exploration of ceremony and sacred sites in cultural revival movements among Ohlone communities, Indigenous peoples to the San Francisco and Monterey areas.
