Religion Major

I chose to major in Religion because of the wide variety of topics covered in Religion courses, and because of the way that these courses allowed me to hone my critical thinking skills. In my time here, I have studied with different Religion professors who have a profound interest in their subjects, and who show their enthusiasm when they teach. I love how small and personalized the major is. It is very easy to mold it according to my future aspirations of going to law school and becoming a lawyer. Picture this: ancient religions and their texts are often the first laws that people ever lived by, yet some of the legal codes today are based upon these ancient laws. In one sense, then, studying religion can mean studying the foundations of contemporary law. Fascinating, right? With the help of the professors in the Religion Department, I have also learned how to analyze and how to write about the texts containing ancient laws, making arguments and supporting them, and seeing different sides of others’ arguments. I probably could have honed these skills in other majors, but not perhaps with such a close knit, positive, and extremely intelligent group of professors who all genuinely care about their students' understanding and future.
